У вас однозначно проблема evdev & hal. Теперь в качестве драйвера устройств ввода вместо уже известных keyboard mouse и подобных будет использоваться evdev. Его конфигурация отличается и посему после обновления и вас отвалилась клавиатура. Решений этой проблемы - правильно настроить драйвер evdev. Можно так:

Если хочется чтобы hal выдавал раскладку создайте правильный policy:

Всёже hal+xorg. есть пути:
откатить hal до 0.5.9
изменить xorg.conf чтоб он игнорировал hal
собрать xorg без флага -hal
нормально настроить hal+xorg по wiki

Попробуй запустить голые Х с xterm. Если там все ок, то смотри уже в сторону DE, если нет, то значит, действительно проблема с драйвером.

У меня в свое время слетело переключение раскладок в X-ах (hal и evdev небыло). Решилось настройкой переключения в консоли. После этого восстановилось переключение раскладки в X-ах
